Linda Estabrook, Executive Director of the Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective (HGLHC), will retire on June 30, 2023 after serving the organization as its Executive Director for 34 years.
Founded in 1983 by volunteer health professionals and supporters, HGLHC evolved into an impactful organization that empowers individuals of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions to lead healthy lives through the provision of health and support services, education, and advocacy. The organization is a fully licensed outpatient medical and dental clinic staffed by professionals, and offers a range of services, referrals, and resources, serving clients in their Hartford and Manchester locations.
Through Linda’s unwavering leadership and commitment, HGLHC maintains a prominent presence throughout Connecticut as a healthcare agency and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. In 1989, at the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Linda became HGLHC’s Executive Director, and has addressed, anticipated, and responded to the comprehensive health needs of LGBTQ+ individuals throughout the Hartford region, heightened public awareness, and influenced public policy in support of their mission and work. Most recently, Linda led her team and the organization in creating a vaccination program in response to the Monkeypox virus along with continued provision of information and resources, and testing for their community.
In recognition of their work and mission, the agency and staff have received awards including the Connecticut Public Health Association Ira V. Hiscock Award for advancing public health through public service, education, advocacy and leadership, and the Imperial Sovereign Court of All Connecticut President’s Award.
Linda, in recognition for her accomplishments, received several awards including the Susan S. Addiss Award in Public Health Practice, the Dorothy Award for Leadership in Health for the LGBTQ+ community, and the Spirit of Community Award Lifetime of Service, promoting health, well-being, and justice.
A Connecticut native, Linda received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Saint Joseph (formerly Saint Joseph College), where she studied sociology and psychology. She earned her Master’s of Public Health from the University of Connecticut, along with a certificate in long-term health care administration.
Linda’s vision to engage community members and supporters of HGLHC and celebrate diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging launched their annual fundraiser, One Big Event. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, “One Big Event” takes place on November 12, 2022, at the Hartford Marriott Downtown.
“We look forward to the next chapter of HGLHC expanding our strong foundation and reputation built by Linda’’, said Ron Funaro, Board President. The Board of Directors, with a grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, is working with Harvest Development Group, a consulting firm specializing in nonprofit organizations, to lead a nationwide search for the new executive leader.
And Always Remember:
Be Well. Be Yourself.
